Sensing the Climate at Microsoft

Time 2 Give in partnership with MantisEdu returned to the Microsoft headquarters in Atlanta to participate their yearly event Blacks in Microsoft. Students at the event got the opportunity to learn about Smart Farming.

Time 2 Give, in collaboration with MantisEdu, made a notable appearance at the Microsoft headquarters in Atlanta for the annual Blacks in Microsoft event. With a commitment to raising the bar from previous years, the focus was set on the groundbreaking concept of Smart Farming.

Smart Farming harnesses sensor technology to revolutionize daily farming practices. MantisEdu, a pioneer in this technology, led by CEO Laron Walker, introduced 60 eager students to the transformative potential of smart sensors in agriculture. The session covered the types of sensors pivotal in smart farming and the myriad benefits they bring to agricultural processes.

Equipped with Microsoft Surfaces and MantisEdu Climate sensors, students were tasked with a hands-on exercise. They were divided into groups, each experimenting with different heat sources to simulate varying climate conditions. This practical approach allowed them to gather data firsthand, culminating in spreadsheets that showcased their findings. The exercise served as a real-world example of how STEM professionals use technology to improve our lives, emphasizing the impact of temperature variations on crop growth rates and how this, in turn, influences market pricing based on demand.

The Smart Farming session struck a chord with the students, offering them an interactive and visual learning experience far beyond the traditional lecture format. The lively discussion that followed highlighted their newfound interest in smart farming techniques, including hydroponics, and a keenness to explore further, with many inquiring about how to acquire the sensors for their projects.
